About the event
Kayaka' ('work') involves renowned Bangalore musicians MD Pallavi and Bruce Lee Mani, coming together to bring ancient, progressive Indian poetry into a contemporary musical frame.
The material for this acoustic concert is drawn mainly from the Vachanas. These verses, written by working class individuals such as cobblers, weavers, sex workers (even thieves) and other working-class individuals, contain a wealth of progressive thought and ideology. Winner of the prestigious 'Vachanasri Award', Pallavi has been working with this material for a long time. Adding Bruce's guitar, compositional skills and genre-fluid approach results in a stirring collaboration - where Western acoustic folk, blues, world music and jazz mingle freely with Indian folk and classical styles - all with hard-hitting, lyrics that have lost none of their power, even after 800 years!
Kayaka presents a unique opportunity to hear these working-class voices from the 11th century, set to contemporary music by two established practitioners.
