About the event
A hundred years ago, the iconic style that later came to be known as Art Deco, was born. It influenced everything from architecture and interior design, jewelry and clothing, to ships and cars and everyday objects such as radios. Art Deco traveled across the world, taking a slightly different form wherever it went. In India, its influence on design can be seen in every corner of the country.
Architect Suchitra Deep will explore its origins and contours in Europe, its adaptation to India, finally focusing on the Art Deco heritage of the neighbourhood of Malleswaram, Bangalore. She is documenting Art Deco and other heritage structures for a website that will be a continuing digital archive and interactive platform for the social, ecological and architectural legacy of Malleswaram.
